Issa Rae Says DEI Has Become A “Bad Word” & Hollywood Is Backtracking On Representation
Issa Rae is sounding the alarm on what she sees as Hollywood’s creative and cultural backslide.
Speaking at TheWrap’s Creators x Hollywood Summit in Los Angeles, Rae said the industry has quietly shifted away from the same level of investment and representation that once opened doors for diverse storytelling. According to Rae, “[DEI] has changed meanings and has become a bad word,” adding that she’s watching studios and executives pull back in real time.
The Insecure creator said the current climate feels painfully familiar, explaining that despite years of progress, the business is once again forcing creators to fight harder for stories that center underrepresented voices. Rae summed up the moment bluntly, saying, “We’re back where we started, in a way, but wiser.”
She also called out what she described as Hollywood’s growing dependence on already-viral creators instead of actively discovering fresh voices, saying the business is in an “identity crisis” and has gotten “a bit lazier in their discovery.” In her view, the system now leans too heavily on social media popularity instead of true creative development.
Rae also reflected on an early career turning point, revealing she once passed on adapting ‘Awkward Black Girl’ for television after being told executives wanted to recast everyone — including her — with celebrities. She said that pitch was an immediate “easy no thank you.”
Despite the industry pullback, Rae made it clear Hoorae is still pushing forward, announcing a partnership with TikTok on its first microdrama series, “Screen Time,” which is set to launch later this month on TikTok and the platform’s new app, PineDrama.
