Nicki Minaj Explains Support For Donald Trump, Says “A Lot Of Rappers Don’t Like Jay-Z But Are Afraid To Say It”
Nicki Minaj is opening up even more about her political views — and why she says publicly supporting Donald Trump became personal for her.
In a new interview with Vulture, Nicki claimed her frustrations with the music industry and longtime issues with Jay-Z helped shape how outspoken she’s become politically. “I think Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot,” she said, later adding, “Lots of rappers don’t like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it.”
Nicki also admitted she kept many of her political opinions private for years because she feared backlash from both fans and the entertainment industry. “It’s been ingrained in everyone’s brain in the music business that we are supposed to be a Democratic family,” she said. “I just knew they would not like me supporting Trump.”
The rapper said the criticism she faced after her controversial 2021 vaccine comments only intensified those feelings. According to the interview, Nicki felt “dogpiled” by people on the left after the viral controversy and claimed the backlash changed how she viewed politics and celebrity culture.
She also suggested there are more conservative celebrities in Hollywood than people realize. “Many celebrities feel the way I do,” Nicki said. “But they don’t say it.” She added, “Sometimes you just need one brave person to get the brunt of the impact.”
Nicki’s comments immediately sparked reactions online, with social media divided over her remarks about politics, Jay-Z, and the entertainment industry. The interview arrives months after she publicly called herself Trump’s “No. 1 fan” during a public appearance earlier this year.
