Hoda Kotb Reveals the Powerful Response Sheryl Lee Ralph Had to a Tough Comment From Robert De Niro
Hoda Kotb is sharing a lesson that stuck with her after a recent conversation with Emmy-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Kotb recalled interviewing Ralph and hearing a story from early in the actress’s career. According to Kotb, Ralph remembered a conversation with Robert De Niro, who told her she was a “magnificent actress,” but also suggested opportunities for her would be limited and that she would have to work especially hard to succeed.
Kotb admitted her initial reaction was to focus on the discouraging portion of the story. But Ralph quickly redirected her attention.
“Did you hear what I said?” Ralph reportedly asked.
When Kotb responded that she had, Ralph pointed out that De Niro had called her a “magnificent actress” — and that was the part she chose to hold onto.
Kotb said Ralph’s perspective helped her understand how powerful it can be to choose which words and experiences deserve your attention. She noted that Ralph eventually went on to earn an Emmy Award and receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, saying the actress’s success reflects the mindset she adopted throughout her career.
“It’s a choice. Everything’s a choice,” Ralph said, according to Kotb.
What do you think — is focusing on the positive part of criticism easier said than done, or a key ingredient to long-term success?
