Former Turks & Caicos Premier Michael Misick Sentenced To More Than 4 Years In Prison
Michael Misick, the former premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands and ex-husband of actress LisaRaye McCoy, has been sentenced to more than four years in prison in a long-running corruption case.
According to the Associated Press, Misick received a sentence of four years and 26 days after being convicted on three counts of bribery. Prosecutors alleged that he abused his public office and benefited from government land deals involving developers.
The sentencing marks another major development in a case that has been unfolding for more than a decade. Misick has consistently denied wrongdoing and previously argued that the charges against him were politically motivated.
Two other men were also sentenced in connection with the case. Former Cabinet minister McAllister Hanchell was sentenced to three years in prison, while attorney Thomas Misick, Michael Misick’s brother, received a four-year sentence. Reports state all three men were taken into custody and are expected to appeal.
The corruption investigation dates back to 2009, when Britain suspended parts of the Turks and Caicos government and imposed direct rule over the territory amid allegations involving government officials and lucrative land transactions. Misick resigned as premier that same year as the scandal intensified.
While many entertainment fans may remember Misick from his high-profile marriage to LisaRaye McCoy, the former political leader is now at the center of one of the Caribbean’s most significant corruption cases, with the latest court ruling bringing the years-long legal battle into a new chapter.
