Supreme Court Rejects President Trump’s Attempt To End Birthright Citizenship

The #SupremeCourt on Tuesday (June 30) struck down President Trump’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship, preserving over a century of precedent that anyone born on U.S. soil is automatically a citizen.

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts declared, “Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights — to freely participate in our political community,” adding that the Fourteenth Amendment’s framers “extended that promise to every free-born person in this land.” Trump, who had personally attended oral arguments, lost the fight to deny citizenship to children born to undocumented immigrants and temporary visa holders; the ruling effectively upholds every lower court decision that had already blocked the order. The Migration Policy Institute estimated roughly 255,000 children born annually to non-citizen parents would have lost legal status under #Trump’s order, with some risking statelessness altogether.
