Marvel Fans Split After Ryan Coogler Announces British Actor David Jonsson As the New Black Panther

#RyanCoogler has Marvel fans split.

The director set the internet on fire over the weekend during Marvel’s Comic-Con panel when he revealed British actor David Jonsson as the new #BlackPanther. Jonsson will step into the role of Prince T’Challa II — the son of Chadwick Boseman’s original T’Challa. Boseman tragically d!ed of colon cancer in 2020 while Coogler was developing the franchise’s second film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where T’Challa’s son was introduced as a child.

Fans had been waiting to see what direction Coogler would take following Boseman’s de@th, but the latest reveal has the fandom split right down the middle. Some are fully on board with the casting, with one fan writing online, “Ryan Coogler refusing to recast T’Challa and choosing to tell the next chapter instead…might end up being one of the best storytelling decisions Marvel ever made.” Others, however, are taking issue with Coogler casting someone who isn’t Black American.

Despite the mixed reactions, Jonsson is confident he’s the right choice for the role. “Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson said onstage after Coogler shared the news. “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let this screen do the talking.” #TJBReacts
