Karmelo Anthony, Texas Teen Convicted In F@tal Track Meet St@bbing, Denied New Trial — 35-Year Sentence Stands
Karmelo Anthony has been denied a new trial following his conviction for f*tally st@bbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a Texas high school track meet. Anthony, 19, was sentenced to 35 years in prison after jurors rejected his claim that he acted in self-defense.
During a two-day hearing, Anthony’s new attorneys raised concerns about a reported “gentleman’s agreement” between prosecutors and his original defense team that kept potentially damaging information about both teens from jurors. The defense also argued Anthony should have been able to testify about why he believed de@dly force was necessary.
The hearing revealed jurors did not hear allegations involving Anthony’s past, as well as claims involving Metcalf, including alleged bullying, r@cial slurs and a$$ault. Prosecutors defended how the case was handled, citing the intense attention and threats surrounding the trial.
The decision comes after the judge who presided over Anthony’s original trial was removed from the post-trial proceedings following concerns over comments he made after the verdict, including saying the jury “got it right.” Despite the new judge denying Anthony’s request for another trial, his attorneys say they plan to continue appealing his conviction.
