Idaho Students K*ller Bryan Kohberger Gets New Hearing As He Tries To Reverse Guilty Plea

Bryan Kohberger’s push to undo the guilty pleas that sent him to prison for life is officially moving forward after an Idaho judge approved two court dates tied to his post-conviction challenge.

Judge Steven Hippler granted Kohberger a June 3, 2027 status conference and a June 17 evidentiary hearing. Kohberger, 31, is serving four consecutive life sentences without parole after pleading guilty to m*rdering University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin in November 2022.

In a handwritten petition, Kohberger claims “ineffective assistance of counsel,” arguing his plea was not entered “knowingly or voluntarily because [it] was induced by unkept promises” and “because of threats asserted by [his] legal counsel.” He also alleges his attorneys failed to disclose “exculpatory discovery” before he accepted the deal.

Kohberger previously signed a factual basis stating he would “hereby admit responsibility” and describing the “k*lling and m*rder” as “willful, unlawful, deliberate, with premeditation and with malice afterthought.”

Prosecutors have asked Hippler to dismiss the petition. If Kohberger succeeds and receives a new trial, he could again face the d*ath penalty if convicted. His plea deal had spared him execution.
