Barack & Michelle Obama Share Their Family Dog Sunny Has Passed Away
The Obamas are mourning the loss of their beloved family dog, Sunny.
#Barack and #MichelleObama broke the news in a joint Instagram post featuring several photos of Sunny, revealing they lost the Portuguese Water Dog after 13 years by their side. The Obamas said Sunny joined the family at the start of their second term in the White House and quickly became a beloved companion to the entire family, describing her as athletic, energetic, fiercely protective of Bo and “pretty much perfect.” They added that they’ll “miss her terribly” and imagine she’s now with her “big brother” Bo, who d!ed in 2021.

Thirteen years is such a long time for a dog to be part of a family, so the memories of Sunny really came through in this piece. I especially liked the little detail about her being protective of Bo—it makes the story feel personal rather than just another celebrity update.
