NFL Clears Philadelphia Eagles Of Wrongdoing After Quarterback Jalen Hurts Played w/ Blood Clot Before Season-Ending Lung Clot Diagnosis

The NFL has cleared the Philadelphia Eagles of wrongdoing after Jalen Hurts played a game with a diagnosed blood clot that later led to clots in both lungs.

According to The Athletic, a league source said the decision “was handled appropriately,” and Philadelphia will face no punishment for its medical protocol or injury reporting.

Hurts reported calf discomfort October 8 after being cleated against the Rams. A superficial clot was discovered during an examination in London, but doctors cleared him to face Jacksonville on October 11. He played every offensive snap in the loss.

After returning home, further testing found deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli in both lungs. Though clinically stable, Hurts is out for the season while receiving blood thinners.

“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” the Eagles and his agent Nicole Lynn said. “We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.”

Coach Nick Sirianni also defended the handling: “The health of our players is always at the forefront of our minds, and we leave that up to the medical experts, but we always, always care deeply about our players,” he said. “When you are completely focused on togetherness and connection, you’re always thinking about the well-being of your guys, and that’s where we were in that situation.”
