California Gov. Gavin Newsom Moves To Commute De@th Sentences Of All 548 Inmates On De@th Row
California Gov. #GavinNewsom is taking a major step toward clearing the state’s de@th row.
On Thursday (Nov. 5), #Newsom announced plans to commute the de@th sentences of all 548 inmates currently awaiting execution, changing their punishments to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sweeping move comes seven years after Newsom issued a moratorium on executions in 2019. Explaining his decision, the governor argued that state-sanctioned k!lling goes against #California’s values and undermines the justice system.
However, the decision isn’t a done deal just yet. Of the 548 inmates affected, 382 have multiple felony convictions, meaning their commutations must first receive approval from the California Supreme Court.
