Oprah Winfrey Reacts To Store Clerk Telling Her She Couldn’t Afford An Expensive Bag
Contrary to popular belief, everyone in the world does not know who Oprah Winfrey is. In fact, in some places, she’s simply a non-famous Black woman who can’t afford to shop in high-end stores. Well, at least that’s the conclusion we came to after hearing about an unpleasant shopping trip that the mogul recently had in Zurich. So what happened? While she was in Switzerland for Tina Turner’s wedding, she left her hotel in Zurich to go shopping. She said she was denied service at a high-end handbag store when the clerk commented that Oprah would not be able to afford the $38,000 bag she had asked to see. How did Oprah respond? She says she left the store without making a fuss, deciding it was better to leave empty-handed than give the employee a sales commission. Of course later, after realizing who Oprah was, a spokeswoman for the Swiss tourism office, told the Associated Press:
We are very sorry for what happened to her, of course, because we think all of our guests and clients should be treated respectfully, and in a professional way.
And the owner (Trudie Goetz) also chimed in with an apology, saying an assistant had shown Oprah several other items before the “misunderstanding” over the bag, which was kept behind a screen. She also said that she was “truly sorry” for the incident because her staff members are trained to treat all customers well. And what does Oprah have to say? She wrote on twitter:
Turns out that store clerk did me a favor. Just found out that bag was $38K!!! She was right I was NOT going to buy it.
Welp.

LOL! She was not going to buy it because she didn’t think it was worth it, not because she couldn’t afford it…let’s make that clear ;-) I love Oprah
I am disappointed that Oprah made a big deal out of the purse incident. I think Oprah should have considered the first culture barrier or perhaps the clerk was misunderstood, or maybe the clerk didnt want to climb up because of a bad back. It could have many other reasons than the race issue. Oprah with all her wealth and celebrity status got a bruised ego because the clerk didn’t show her special treatment and she is using the race thing. I am white women stricken with a chronic illness and I have friends tell me that I don’t want to look at something because it’s too expensive and I don’t get offended. I am saddened and disappointed that Oprah would make a big deal out of a materialistic issue. If you were refused proper medical treatment like I face everyday then all this would make sense. But to be about a purse in Switzerland…oh no I don’t feel sorry for you are so rich and healthy to be shopping in a beautiful country, something I will never be able to do.
Donna – you need to stop whining and feeling sorry for yourself! Your whole post was annoying and you made it a pity party about you – yuck!!
