[INTERVIEW] DJ Mustard Talks Over Saturation of DJs, Staying Competitive + Most Annoying Part of His Job
DJ Mustard (real name Dijon McFarlane), who is best known for being the official DJ of Compton bred rapper YG, as well as for producing a string of hit singles (Tyga’s, “Rack City”, YG’s, “My Nig-a”, and Trey Songz’ “Na Na“) has become one of the hottest names in the game. theJasmineBRAND.com: You’re like one of the most sought after DJs, what is your appeal?
DJ Mustard: I’m turnin’ up on these nig-as that’s my appeal. Nig-as got me fuc-ed up, that’s my appeal. Anything else you hear that sound like me ain’t real.
theJasmineBRAND.com: So you’re gonna be the house DJ for the VMA’s. How do you prepare for a show like that?
DJ Mustard: I DJ everyday, so I just keep my focus on really just getting ready, studying my music, doing my research, just playing all my sh-t.
theJasmineBRAND.com: There’s an over saturation of DJs. How do you keep your edge? How do you stay above the cut?
