(EXCLUSIVE) The Weeknd – Lawsuit Accusing Him Stealing Music Dismissed
theJasmineBRAND.com exclusively reports, The Weeknd has reached a settlement in the legal battle accusing him of stealing music and screwing them out of royalties and the entire case against the singer has been dismissed.
A U.K based company named Cutting Edge Music filed a federal lawsuit against singer The Weeknd and Universal Music.
The company deals with providing financing to motion pictures and acquires interest in film compositions and sound recordings. It then exploits the film score catalog it owns to make a ton of money.
They explained they are the exclusive licensee and administrator of the song recording entitled, “The Machine” composed by world famous Tom Raybould – which was then used in the 2013 film by the same name.
The composer received a message from a producer who worked with the Weeknd saying he had sampled his song and was a big fan.
The Weeknd then released a song entitled, ‘The Hills” from his hit album “Beauty Behind the Madness”. The company accused the singer of stealing their track and including it in his song without consent of paying them.
The company explained that the hit song has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and was even remixed with Nicki Minaj on SNL.
They filed suit against The Weeknd for copyright infringement demanding 150k in damages for each act of infringement along with an injunction against the singer from continuing to release or perform the song.
Then on March 5th, docs were filed by the music company explaining they are dismissing all claims against the singer and the record labels. The parties clearly reached a financial settlement that stated the company would dismiss the case once the terms of the deal were agreed on. The Weeknd never responded to the allegations in the lawsuit.
