(EXCLUSIVE) Kendrick Lamar Settles Lawsuit Over Allegations He Ripped Off 70’s Musician
Kendrick Lamar Settles Lawsuit
theJasmineBRAND.com exclusively reports, Kendrick Lamar has settled the lawsuit accusing him of ripping off a famous 70’s musician . The rapper signed a confidential settlement which brings an end to the case.
Here’s the latest: On November 14th, docs were filed in the case by the plaintiff explaining they reached a settlement with Kendrick. The provisions of the deal will remain confidential but they have settled the entire case. Per the deal, the legal battle will be closed forever.
Here’s the backstory: Music companies Golden Withers Music and Musidex Music, filed a federal lawsuit against Kendrick Lamar and Top Dawg Music.
They explained they own the copyright to the song, “Don’t You Want to Stay” written by Bill Withers, Melvin Dunlap and Raymond Jackson and released in 1975 by Withers.
Kendrick released a song entitled, “I Do This” in 2013. They accused the rapper of using the entire music of their song and only adding rap and lyrics over their track.
Back in 2013, they sent off a legal letter to Kendrick’s team explaining he had infringed on their copyright. They never received a response and again earlier this year, Kendrick was still distributing the track despite their demands to cease.
The companies wanted him to pay the maximum amount in damages for the illegal use of their music. Golden Withers Music and Musidex Music filed suit demanding an injunction against Kendrick from continuing to profit illegally off their work along with all profits he made from the track.
Kendrick responded, explaining his track “I Do This” was independently created by him and the other producers without any reference or use of the other song in question.
He said if there are similarities in the two songs, those similarities are not able to be copyrighted due to them being common.
Kendrick denied all the allegations in the original complaint and points out the companies waited too long to even sue, past the statute of limitations and he says they have not been caused any damage by his actions. The rapper demanded the entire lawsuit be thrown out and the plaintiff’s cover his legal bills.
