EXCLUSIVE: Cam Newton Settles Lawsuit Over Video Game
theJasmineBRAND exclusively reports, Cameron Newton has reached a settlement in a legal battle against a video game company. On January 22, docs were filed in the case revealing the NFL’er and the company reached a settlement in the case that will bring a close to the entire lawsuit. Cam’s lawyer states,
I write to inform the Court that last month the parties entered into discussions about a potential settlement of the dispute, and as of this week they have agreed upon terms for that settlement. Pending final signatures and payment, Plaintiff expects to dismiss the action with prejudice in the near future.
Here’s the backstory: Newton said he allowed a video game company to use his image for a game they were developing based on the NFL star, and even though the game was never released, he wanted to be compensated. According to documents filed by Cameron J. Newton Enterprises, he entered into an agreement with Hugo Games with a “pay or play deal” worth $1 million.
Newton’s company claimed Hugo agreed that even if the untitled “Cam Newton Video Game” didn’t get released, the payments were guaranteed.
The partnership between Newton and Hugo was announced last year, and the game was supposed to be released at the end of 2016. Newton blamed the company for not paying him and noted that the company’s recent revenue reports show that the company was in the red by millions of dollars.
He had already received $200,000 of the guaranteed million, but wanted the remaining balance that he said they owed.
