Lena Waithe Lands Comedy Pilot ‘Twenties’
More TV time for Lena Waithe. The Emmy award winner has landed a new comedy pilot from TBS called, Twenties. Waithe, whose new cable drama The Chi was just given a second season, will create, write and executive produce the single-camera comedy. The series is based on her YouTube series of the same name. The comedy revolves around Hattie, a queer black girl, and her two best friends, Marie and Nina, who together spend their days talking shit and chasing their dreams. Twenties explores friendship, finding love and screwing everything up along the way. Waithe says of the project,
I wrote Twenties back in 2009. I always wanted to tell a story where a queer black woman was the protagonist and I’m so grateful to TBS for giving me a platform to tell this story. Queer black characters have been the sidekick for long enough, it’s time for us to finally take the lead.
Waithe is an actress, producer, and screenwriter, best known for her role as Denise on the 2015 Netflix series Master of None. Waithe made history at the 2017 Emmys when she won an award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series on Master of None, becoming the first black woman to do so.The “Thanksgiving” episode for which she won the Emmy was partially based on her personal experience coming out to her mother. She is the creative force behind the Showtime series The Chi.
