EXCLUSIVE: Tupac ‘All Eyez On Me’ Lawsuit Dismissed By Journalist Kevin Powell
Tupac ‘All Eyez On Me’ Lawsuit Dismissed By Journalist Kevin Powell
theJasmineBRAND exclusively reports the legal battle over the Tupac biopic “All Eyez on Me” has been dismissed with the journalist who interviewed the late rapper throwing out his claims against the film makers.
“All Eyez on Me” was a 2017 biographical drama film about hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur, directed by Benny Boom and written by Jeremy Haft, Eddie Gonzalez and Steven Bagatourian. Titled after Shakur’s 1996 fourth studio album, the film starred Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Shakur with Kat Graham, Lauren Cohan, Hill Harper and Danai Gurira in supporting roles.
Here’s the backstory: Author and journalist Kevin Powell sued Lionsgate, Morgan Creek Pictures and the film producers/screenwriters. He announced on social media that he filed the lawsuit.
Powell accused the defendants of using articles he wrote and interviews conducted with Tupac in the 1990’s as a basis for All Eyez On Me screenplay.
Powell said in his suit that rather than the film maker’s reaching out to him for permission or to license his work, they willfully and improperly developed the infringing film derived from his articles.
Here’s the latest: On April 6th, Powell voluntarily dismissed all his claims against the defendants. The dismissal allows for him to refile four and the six claims brought at a later time if he wishes.
