Wendy Williams Responds to Clark Sisters Backlash: Please Come On My Show!
Wendy Williams has sparked yet another controversy. On Tuesday (April 17th), during Hot Topics, the talk show host reported on the triumph of Snoop Dogg’s gospel album – “Bible of Love.” The album was released in March 2018 and premiered No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart. Following the news, Williams contrasted the success of Snoop’s album to the career of Gospel group, The Clark Sisters. The host stated,
I was just thinking, if I was a gospel artist – or group – like The Clark Sisters, would I be mad that Snoop got number one? The Clark Sisters have been doing gospel for forever. Have the gotten a number one? Ah well, step up your game.
Williams’ comments sparked a discourse among social media, the gospel community, and numerous fans. Several defended their “legendary” status including celebrity stylist, Thomasina “Goo Goo” Atkins.
Atkins, the little sister of Gospel duo group Mary Mary, took to social media to speak her piece on Williams’ comments, and demanded the syndicated daytime talk show host owe The Clark Sisters an apology! In her lengthy comment she highlighted,
YOU don’t know them because they don’t live messy scandalous lives and that’s ALL YOU know and seem to care about. But to disrespect and disregard ALL that they have accomplished in music (all genres), and further suggest jealousy was tasteless, IGNORANT, disrespectful and uncalled for.
Atkins also took it upon herself to inform readers the severity of the uproar Williams’ comments caused,
The Gospel music industry is VERY OFFENDED by your most recent IGNORANT, uninformed comments regarding OUR QUEENS! And to the LEGENDARY CLARK SISTERS, WE ADORE YOU!
Atkins isn’t the only one, though. Kim Burrell stroked up a few choice words of her own. From her private Instagram account, Burrell wrote,
Because I’m not good at posting on Instagram I screenshot this because I concur with @TheGooGoo. Thank you to ALL who are standing with us for The Incredible Clarks! WATCH IT WENDY.
According to research, The Clark Sisters have not actually received a number one album. In fact, the women have received two Grammy Awards and been nominated for seven. The group has a few Billboard entries, but none are albums or No. 1(s).
On Thursday afternoon, Wendy responded to the backlash saying,
I didn’t mean anything bad about the Clark Sisters.
She also went on to ask them to come onto the show and perform.
