Alleged Co-Writer Of Aaliyah’s “Heartbroken” Sues Aaliyah Estate, Timbaland, & Missy Elliott
Virginia native duo Missy Elliott, Timbaland, and Aaliyah’s estate are being sued by a writer who is claiming he helped Timbo produce and Elliott pen the late Aaliyah classic “Heartbroken,” but was never compensated. Court documents claim the track was written and recorded in 1994 (or 1995) and was eventually released in 1996 by Aaliyah, but Terry Williams is claiming Elliott sold the song without his permission.
Williams claims he had an agreement with Elliott to share profits of the track, and when it was was released, he noticed how the song was similar to his; citing the song had a similar sound and lyrics. Williams also points out how his contribution to the song was redacted from the knowledge of Timbo and Aaliyah.
Within the suit, Williams affirms he has rights to the song and is entitled to a portion of the profits. The song in question was featured on Aaliyah’s sophomore album “One in a Million.”
