Prince’s Estate Wins $7 Million In Lawsuit

Good news for Prince’s estate. After a long legal battle with Eye Records, the estate was awarded $7 million. The late iconic singer’s estate said Eye Records is nothing more than a

“bootleg label dedicated to Prince.”

The label also has to remove its Prince property.

His estate sued back in August 2018. It said Eye Records didn’t have the rights to put out the nearly 20 Prince projects it released after his passing. Live performances and even songs Prince hadn’t released were included in the lawsuit.

Eye Records was accused of using digital retail store newlovesigne.com to make money off of Prince’s name and music. Prince’s estate sued for $2 million for each and every trademark violation. While it wasn’t given that much, it walked with $7 million. And the website has since been removed.

Interestingly enough, the fight over his $200 million estate is still going and shows no signs of wrapping up anytime soon. As of this past April, the estate’s administrator already shelled out $45 million in expenses. Prince’s heirs, his six siblings,  asked for a “transition plan” to get a new administrator.

The singer didn’t have a will, and word is much of his estate could go to lawyers for court costs and ongoing lawsuits.

The heirs put their differences aside and battled with Comerica, who was named as the estate’s administrator, with claims that Comerica owed $31 million in estate back taxes. They added that the amount would

“continue to accumulate interest.”

It looks like the estate still has a long way to go before things are finalized.

Prince died on April 21, 2016 in his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota. He was 57-years-old.
