R. Kelly’s Lawyer Shuts Down Claims Singer Has Herpes, Says There’s ‘Zero Evidence’
While singer R. Kelly faces racketeering charges, more is coming out about his trial. A member of his legal team, Douglas C. Anton, tells Bossip there is “zero evidence” that the singer infected a woman, whose identity is being concealed, with herpes.
Still, while prosecutors say they have Kelly’s medical records, Anton is challenging how they obtained them as well as how to prove if Kelly, whose real name is Robert Kelly, or the woman had the condition first.
Anton told the judge in documents that Jane Doe No. 5,
“has had her civil case pending for some months and she has not been able to prove a scintilla of her allegations and has offered no evidence to support her claims that Robert gave her herpes.”
Anton also pointed out that it’s not illegal for someone to have multiple sex partners. He said Kelly has had consensual sexual encounters with
“various people throughout his life, possibly more than normal people because he is a rock star.”
Ultimately, Anton hoped to plead Kelly’s case so that he could be released on bail. He was arrested earlier this month for not only racketeering charges but also child pornography and obstruction of justice. He’s scheduled to be arraigned on the racketeering charge Friday, which stem from allegations he sought out underaged women at his concerts for sexual encounters.
He argued that Kelly is not a flight risk considering he’s given up his passport, but also that he has no money. He said it’s gotten so bad that he and other lawyers are working pro bono.
Interestingly enough, when he was arrested he was out on bail for other charges he was hit with earlier this year. In that incident, he pleaded not guilty for 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims. Three of those women were minors. The alleged incidents occurred from 1998 to 2010.
Kelly has been catching lots of heat legally ever since Surviving R. Kelly aired on Lifetime earlier this year.
In that documentary, several women came forward and detailed their experience of Kelly allegedly sexually, physically, verbally and mentally abusing them. Many of the women were minors at the time as well.
