Maya Angelou Pissed At Dr. King’s Memorial Quote, “Makes him look like an arrogant twit.”

Poet and Author Dr. Maya Angelou is not a happy camper when it comes to the quote on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s memorial monument, that recently was unveiled in Washington, DC. The quote on the monument reads:
“I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness”
Dr. Angelou told the Washington Post’s Gene Weingarten:
“The quote makes Dr. Martin Luther King look like an arrogant twit, he was anything but that. He was far too profound a man for that four-letter word to apply.”
So where did that quote come from? Apparently, the quote has been taken out of context from a sermon Dr. King gave shortly before his death, in which he imagined what his eulogy would sound like. The full context of the quote is this:
“If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice, say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.”
Dr. Angelou told Weingarten, by taking out the “if clause” at the beginning of the quote makes Dr. King appear conceited and pompous. Dr. Angelou was on a committee of historians who helped choose the inscriptions. Supposedly, the committee chose the quote in its entirety but was shortened by memorial officials due to space constraints. Currently, the quote stands, but perhaps, in the near future it will be changed or modified to convey its true and intended meaning….otherwise, Dr. Angelou may continue to chew their asses out in public :)
But my question is, when you read the quote, did you get the same interpretation as Dr. Angelou?
