“I Will Always Love You” Was Almost Patti LaBelle’s Song!
“I Will Always Love You” may have originally been crooned by country icon Dolly Parton, but, according to reports, Whitney Houston wasn’t the first R&B diva choice to remake it. Patti LaBelle appeared on Andy Cohen‘s “Watch What Happens Live” last night (10/28/19), and revealed that Dolly personally asked her to cover the classic.
Patti said:
“Dolly Parton offered it to me before ‘The Bodyguard,’ and I said to Dolly, ‘Oh, yes. I want to do that song, honey.’ Who wouldn’t? Before I could say real yes, it was in the movie and Whitney killed it. So, I have not done it since Whitney, but I plan to put it in my show one day.”
But, Patti says that Whitney was the perfect voice for the song – which eventually won three Grammy awards:
“I was so happy that Whitney got that song and it just went like it did. That’s how show business is. You never know what you’re gonna put down.”
Thankfully, Patti struck gold with her own irreplaceable hits, like “On My Own,” “New Attitude,” and “If Only You Knew.” And let us not forget that Patti Pie season is upon us!
