Last night (1/26/20) marked music’s biggest night of the year – the 62nd annual Grammy Awards. Perhaps Lizzo can be considered the night’s golden child in R&B/hip-hop. She opened the show with a fun medley of her hits, “Cuz I Love You” and “Truth Hurts.” She, like many of the acts, took the time to tribute fallen basketball icon Kobe Bryant, with this declaration:

“Tonight is for Kobe!”

Lizzo took home the trophies for Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best Traditional R&B Performance.

Tyler the Creator (literally) blazed the stage with his performance featuring veteran singers Charlie Wilson and Boyz II Men. He, later, accepted hardware for Best Rap Album.

But, perhaps more notably, he called out the Recording Academy for the way Black artists are placed in incorrect categories. He alluded at the labeling of “urban” and “rap” being segregational. In his press conference, Tyler the Creator said:

“On one side I’m very grateful that what I made could be acknowledged in a world like this. But it also sucks that whenever we – and I mean guys that look like me – do anything that’s genre-bending or anything, they always put it in a rap or urban category. And I don’t like that urban word. It’s just a politcally correct way to say the N-word to me. So when I hear that, I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just be in pop?’ So half of me feels like the rap nomination was a backhanded compliment.”

Lil Nas X bridged the gap between rap, country, EDM, and K-Pop with his live renditions of “Old Town Road” and the new “Rodeo” remix featuring Nas. He also took home awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video.

DJ Khaled proved one of his vintage catchphrases – “We the best!” – to be evergreen! He rounded up Meek Mill, John Legend, Roddy Ricch, and Kirk Franklin to pay tribute to two Los Angeles legends – slain rapper Nipsey Hussle and Kobe Bryant. He assisted in Nipsey winning one of his two posthumous Grammys for Best Rap/Sung Performance.

First Lady Michelle Obama even has her own gold megaphone for Best Spoken Word Album for her narration of her groundbreaking memoir, “Becoming.”
