MTV VMA’s Planned For August, Ceremony Will Be “Limited Or No-Audience”
In the midst of a global COVID-19 pandemic, organizations are trying to navigate what their major annual events will look like, and MTV’s Video Music Awards are no different. New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, announced today (June 30) that the VMA’s will be held at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center with “limited or no audience.”
The annual VMAs that first began in 1984 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, bring out the biggest artists in music.
It was likely impossible to know that just last year, as the MTV Video Music Awards were taking place in Newark, NJ, that a year later, the industry would have to navigate audience-less awards and remote performances.

In June 2020, the BET Awards, hosted by actress and activist, Amanda Seales, held a virtual awards program with musical performances held in various locations. Former First lady, Michelle Obama, presented Beyoncé with the 2020 Humanitarian Award, and that too, was graciously accepted virtually.

There’s no question that live performances with fans reciprocating energy gives off phenomenal performances, such as the jaw-dropping performance from Lizzo at the MTV Video Music Awards last year.
