Kenya Barris Announces Final ‘Black-Ish’ Spinoff
Are you ready for another “Black-ish” spinoff? After the success of “Grown-ish” on Freeform and “Mixed-ish” on ABC, creator Kenya Barris said another spinoff is currently in the works.
When asked about one more spinoff, he told Deadline:
“We’re brewing it, yeah… It’s something I’m really super excited about it…and hopefully it gets done, and adds to that world in a really special way.”
The 45-year-old producer is responsible for the critically acclaimed series “Black-ish”, its spinoffs “Grown-ish” and “Mixed-ish”, and the latest, #BlackAF on Netflix.
In 2014, Kenya Barris debuted “Black-ish”, a series that follows an upper-middle-class African-American family led by Andre ‘Dre’ Johnson (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross). It showcases their lives with their four children as they try to balance multiple personal and sociopolitical issues. Since its premiere, Black-ish has earned several NAACP Image Awards and a Children’s Peabody Award in 2016. The series is also loosely based on Kenya Barris’s real life.
Four years later (2018), actress Yara Shahidi, who plays the eldest Johnson child, Zoey Johnson, went on to star in “Grown-ish.” The show follows Zoey Johnson as she goes to college, and begins her journey to adulthood.
A year later (2019), “Mixed-ish” was created. This series is a not only a second spin-off to “Black-ish”, but also a show surrounding Dr. Rainbow “Bow” Johnson’s upbringing in a biracial family in the 1980s.
This year, Barris made his acting debut in a series developed by himself and ordered by Netflix. Titled #BlackAF. It co-stars Rashida Jones and Iman Benson.
