‘Wonder Woman’ Actress Gal Gadot Cast In Cleopatra Remake, The Internet Tells Her To Give The Role To A Woman Of Color
A movie based on the Queen of the Nile, Cleopatra has finally gotten the green light, but the choice of the film’s lead has caused much controversy. Heated debates have begun about Paramount’s decision to cast Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot as the lead in the remake.
In January of 2019, there were rumors that both Lady Gaga and Angelina Jolie were competing for the part, but even back then the internet erupted with anger, accusing Sony of “whitewashing” the role. Beyonce and Rihanna‘s names also came up as possible candidates to portray Cleopatra.

Lady Gaga
Elizabeth Taylor originally took on the role in 1963.
For many years there has been discussion of what race Cleopatra actually was. She was born in Egypt but it has been believed that she is actually of Greek descent. In 2009 archeologists found the remains of a woman with brown skin, who they say was Princess Arsinoe, Cleopatra’s sister in Ephesus, Turkey. The remains concluded that Princess Arsinoe and her mother both had an “African Skeleton,” which would mean that she could have been Black or had brown skin.
While some feel as though Gal Gadot, Lady Gaga, nor Angelina Jolie would be whitewashing, because Cleopatra was reportedly White, some expressed their issue with the casting, and wants Gal Gadot to give up the role to an actress of color.
