‘American Housewife’ Actress Carly Hughes Leaves Show: I Was No Longer Able To Work In The Toxic Environment
Carly Hughes of the hit series “American Housewife” is the latest actress to exit a show because of an alleged toxic environment. While Carly Hughes’ character was in the season 5 premiere that aired on Oct. 28, she wasn’t on the Nov. 4th episode.
Carly Hughes, who played Angela on the ABC show, explained her decision to Deadline Monday and said:
“I was no longer able to work in the toxic environment that was created on ‘American Housewife.’ I made the decision to leave to protect myself from that type of discrimination. As a black woman in entertainment, I feel the responsibility to stand up for what I deserve, what we all deserve – to be treated equally. I wish the show well, and I am excited for a new chapter and to be able to pursue the opportunities ahead.”
ABC Signature is now looking into Hughes’ claims and creator Sarah Dunn and line producer Mark J. Greenberg have stepped back from producing the series. Showrunners Rick Wiener and Kenny Schwartz also had to take sensitivity training.
A representative for “American Housewife” said in a statement:
“Carly was a valued member of the cast, and we had hoped she would return to the show this season. The concerns she raised led to positive changes to the workplace and improvements to the culture, but we respect the decision she made to move on. We wish her nothing but the best.”
Meanwhile, actress Holly Robinson Peete is slated to join the show.
