Actress Gal Gadot Defends Playing Cleopatra After Backlash, Says Those With An Issue Can Make Their Own Movie
Actress Gal Gadot has spoken out after receiving lots of criticism for landing the role as Cleopatra in an upcoming film.
Many spoke out against Gal Gadot, stating that the role should’ve gone to a person of color.
Now, Gal Gadot has spoken out and defended her decision to play the part.
She said during an interview with BBC that she disagrees with arguments that an African or Arab woman needs to play Cleopatra.
She said Cleopatra was a Ptolemaic ruler from Macedonia and added:
“First of all if you want to be true to the facts then Cleopatra was Macedonian. We were looking for a Macedonian actress that could fit Cleopatra. She wasn’t there, and I was very passionate about Cleopatra.”
She added:
“I have friends from across the globe, whether they’re Muslims or Christian or Catholic or atheist or Buddhist, or Jewish of course…People are people, and with me I want to celebrate the legacy of Cleopatra and honor this amazing historic icon that I admire so much.”
She went on to say that those who take issue with her playing the role can create their own:
“You know, anybody can make this movie and anybody can go ahead and do it. I’m very passionate that I’m going to do my own too.”
