‘Black Panther’ Sequel To Focus On The ‘Mythology & Inspiration’ Of Wakanda
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has revealed what viewers can expect for the Black Panther sequel. This time around, the film will focus on the land of Wakanda and its people.
He told Deadline:
“So much of the comics and that first movie is the world of Wakanda. Wakanda is a place to further explore with characters and different subcultures. This was always and initially the primary focus of the next story.”
Released on Jan. 29, 2018, the first Black Panther told the story of T’Challa returning home to Africa’s Wakanda to serve as king following his father’s death. His reign is put to the test after enemies emerge, calling for him to determine the true fate of Wakanda with his allies.
Kevin Feige continued and confirmed that the late Chadwick Boseman’s character, T’Challa, would not be recast after his untimely death. He also said there would be no digital form of him in the film.
Black Panther 2 is slated for a July 2022 release, and Ryan Coogler has already started writing its story. Kevin Feige reiterated that Wakanda would be the center of the story:
“Ryan Coogler is working very hard right now on the script with all the respect and love and genius that he has, which gives us great solace, so it was always about furthering the mythology and the inspiration of Wakanda. There’s also the task of honoring and respecting the ongoing learnings and teachings from Chad as well.”

Kevin Feige previously explained why Chadwick Boseman’s character wouldn’t be recast:
“I wanted to acknowledge the devastating loss of a dear friend and member of the Marvel Studios family. Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives professionally and personally. His portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past.”
He went on to say:
“To honor the legacy that Chad helped us build through his portrayal of the king of Wakanda, we want to continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all of the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film.”
Filming for Black Panther 2 starts in July.
