Mary J. Blige Says Music Saved Her In Newly-Released Trailer For ‘My Life’ Documentary [WATCH]
The first look into Mary J. Blige‘s documentary–Mary J. Blige’s My Life–has been released, and it looks like the acclaimed star is really opening up!
The documentary takes a closer look into the inspiration behind and impact of her sophomore album, My Life. The album was released back in 1994 and spawned hits like “I’m Goin’ Down” and “Mary Jane (All Night Long).”
In the newly-released trailer, Mary J. Blige first opens up about how music was a saving grace to her. She states:
“The only thing, I think, that kept us guided was the music. It just saved you.”
She continues, providing additional context to how music “saved” her:
“In the neighborhood we lived in, it’s like prison. There was a lot wrong, and it was a lot. I needed to get out. That’s why I had that pen.”
Later, Mary J. Blige elaborates on what was going on behind the scenes of penning My Life–as well as how she was surprised by fans’ reception of it. She claims:
“My Life is probably my darkest album at one of the darkest times I’ve had. Most of the time I was just depressed and didn’t want to live. I had it all inside and I was able to sing it and write it, and I didn’t know that so many people felt the same way.”
On a similar note, Taraji P. Henson then acknowledges the impact of Mary J. Blige and her second album, saying:
“She made it okay for people to say ‘it’s alright to be me.'”

Mary J. Blige’s My Life is a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the album’s release, although it was released almost 27 years ago. Mary J. Blige and Sean “Diddy” Combs served as executive producers for the film, and Quincy Jones is credited as the executive music producer. The documentary will be available on Amazon Prime Video on June 25th.
