Denzel Washington Hilariously Recalls Losing Oscar To Sean Connery: I’m Leaving Here With Something
Denzel Washington’s story about losing an Oscar went viral as he got candid about his determination not to leave the event empty-handed.
In a resurfaced 2018 interview from Jamie Foxx’s Off The Script, Denzel Washington opens up about his journey as an actor and shared several hilarious moments, including the time he lost a Best Supporting Actor Oscar to Sean Connery in 1988. Back then, Sean Connery was nominated for his role in The Untouchables. The film followed the story of a Federal Agent tracking down the infamous Al Capone, a ruthless Chicago Gangster in the late 1920s.
Denzel Washington received a nod for Cry Freedom, which is based on the true story of South African Leader – Steve Biko.
Washington told Jamie Foxx,
“Let me tell you a Sean Connery story. He was up forThe Untouchables, I was up for Cry Freedom, and he comes out to present an award and got a three-minute standing ovation — for presenting an award.”
He continued,
“I went to get the coats. ‘Cause I know I ain’t winning tonight. So I’m leaving without the Oscar, but as I’m leaving, I see them in the back getting the food ready for the governor’s ball. I see a big tray, I’m like ‘I’m leaving here with somethin’. I’m from around the way, I’m leaving with something.”
