Ashanti Will Re-Record 2002 Self-Titled Debut Album Now That She Owns Her Masters
Ashanti recently shared her latest victory as she revealed that she now officially owns her masters to her self-titled debut album and will be re-recording the project as an independent artist.
In 2002, Ashanti, 40, released her critically-acclaimed debut album. The project, which features 17 songs, earned the songstress multiple awards and accolades including eight Billboard Music Awards, two American Music Awards, and a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. The album debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200 chart and has since been certified triple platinum in the United States and sold 6 million copies worldwide by the end of 2003.
During a recent interview on the Tamron Hall Show, Ashanti shared the exciting news that she’s recently received the masters to her first album. When asked what owning her music means to her, Ashanti answered,
“It’s so surreal, I have an amazing legal team. I got my first record deal when I was 14 years old, so understanding and seeing how things have changed so much from then to now and conceptually understanding what you’re signing is so imperative and so important nowadays.”
Ashanti continued and revealed that she’ll be re-recording her first album as an independent artist.
“The fact that I’ll be able to re-record my first album and put everything together and…”
Before she could finish Tamron Hall jumped in and said,
“Wait, that’s the big announcement! I was going to build up to that!”
The talk show host excitingly added,
“She’s re-recording the album now as an independent artist. Yesterday’s price is not today’s price!”
