EXCLUSIVE: Nicci Gilbert Says If She Had Ownership Of ‘R&B Divas’ ‘It Would Still Be Here,’ Talks Rebooting Reality Series & Where She Stands W/ Syleena Johnson

In an exclusive interview with theJasmineBRAND.com, Nicole “Nicci” Gilbert-Daniels dished on her upcoming streaming service, plans to bring back the popular series ‘R&B Divas’ and where she currently stands with her former co-star singer/actress Syleena Johnson.

Nicci Gilbert is no stranger to the spotlight. In addition to being the former lead vocalist of the 90s R&B group ‘Brownstone,’ many fans know of Nicci Gilbert from her time on ‘R&B Divas: Atlanta.’ The TV One series premiered in 2012 and the following year a spin-off titled ‘R&B Divas: Los Angeles’ was announced. The reality series ended in 2014.

While chatting with us, Gilbert revealed that she’s working on a streaming service of her own and has plans to bring the series ‘R&B Divas’ out of retirement via her upcoming platform. She said,

“Our target audience is women and girls. We believe like the first season of ‘R&B Divas’ – we believe you can tell a woman’s real organic authentic stories and it can still be compelling and exciting to watch.”

She continued,

“All that being famous and being popular is cool, but [it’s important] to own your intellectual property rights, which is what I started pitching after ‘R&B Divas.’ So every conversation I
had after that was about ownership.”

She then hinted that she’s working on a reboot of ‘R&B Divas.’

“I know the power of connecting with creative women and making them feel like they have equity and equality that’s all we had to do with ‘R&B Divas.’ We would still be here and there’s a possibility that an iteration of that [show] is coming back but it’ll be coming to my [streaming] platform.”

When asked if fans can expect to see a new version of ‘R&B Divas,’ Gilbert answered,

“I hope so! I’ve reached out to all the ladies [and] some of them have been really excited. Others have been [working] on other projects and they’re like, ‘let me think about it.’ But I’m not gonna quit trying.”

Gilbert then shared that despite what happened between her and Syleena Johnson, 45, on the initial running of ‘R&B Divas,’ they are good friends.

She said, 

“To be clear like, for people who are like, ‘I hate her call Syleena on her’ or whatever – me and Syleena are good! We have hugged it out – we have talked it out. Hopefully, we’ll have more opportunities to share and work together.”

Prior to the series going off-air, Gilbert served as an executive producer for ‘R&B Divas.’ During her interview with us, she revealed that other producers on the series didn’t want her to be friends with Syleena Johnson to add to the drama of the show and they continue to blame her for the “demise” of the franchise. 

She added,

“If I had ownership of the show that I created – if I knew the importance of that – it would still be here. I have no doubt because everybody connected to [‘R&B Divas’] knows what my intentions were – for this to be the platform that takes us to the next level.”
