Steve Harvey Recalls Owing IRS $22 Million, Reveals His Accountant Was Stealing His Money For 7 Years
Steve Harvey is getting candid about a tough time he faced.
During a recent interview, the 65-year-old tv host/comedian recalled owing the IRS $22 million in back taxes in 2007. Steve Harvey explained that when his trusted accountant passed away, he realized that the accountant had been stealing money from him for the past 7 years!
“My accountant died, and a girl who worked for him called my lawyer and said, ‘we have a problem.’ She had found on the floor all my tax forms for 7 years, signed with the checks stapled to them.”
He continued,
“Well they were cashing the checks, keeping the money and not turning in the tax forms…. They didn’t cash it, they took the money out the account and matched they exact number.. Little did I know, it was some people taking the money out… I ended up owing [the gov’t] $22 million.”
This isn’t the first time the “Family Feud” host has opened up about this unfortunate mishap. In a previous interview with Essence, Steve Harvey revealed that he was fearful of his $22 million tax lien affecting his marriage to wife, Marjorie Harvey. They pair had just gotten married when the tax lien took place. Harvey told the magazine that his closest friends told him that it would be in his best interest not to tell his wife. According to Steve, they expressed,
“She’ll leave you. This is the happiest we’ve ever seen you..but nobody is going to stick around with this kind of mess.”
Instead of following the advice of his confidants, Steve Harvey decided to share the information with his wife.
“I said, ‘If this woman leaves me over this, I will be the most surprised man on planet Earth.”
Thankfully, Marjorie stood by her man and the couple has remained married ever since!
