Shonda Rhimes Shares Unfiltered Opinion About ‘Barbie’ Movie: ‘I Think A Lot Of People Were Expecting So Much More’
Television producer and writer Shonda Rhimes recently shared her thoughts on the popular Barbie movie following its debut last year.
During a recent cover interview, the 54-year-old TV show creator was candid about her opinion toward the 2023 comedy fantasy directed by Greta Gerwig. Barbie follows (Stereotypical) Barbie – portrayed by Margot Robbie — and her quest to save the matriarchal society of Barbieland from being changed to a patriarchal social system. The film reportedly grossed $1.446 billion globally.
In the cover story, Shonda Rhimes appeared to throw subtle shade at the movie when the interviewer questioned if she had seen it in theaters. In response, the screenwriter said people tried to make the film “so much more” than it was.

When the interviewer asked if Shonda went to a theater to watch the film, she reportedly replied,
“I saw the Barbie movie at home.”
After questioning if the Shondaland founder liked the movie, Shonda expressed,
“No comment.”
Seemingly taken back by her response, the interviewer followed with,
“What? Really?”
Shonda went on and explained,
“OK, here’s what I’ll say. If you’re expecting a Barbie movie, then I thought it was great. But I think a lot of people were expecting so much more, and then tried to make it so much more.”

She continued,
“There was nothing wrong with the movie; I thought it was totally delightful. But the weight people put on a movie about Barbie was very interesting to me.”
Shonda, who is the writer behind ABC’s televised hits “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” added,
“I’ve heard the song “I’m Just Ken” in my house every single day because one of my kids sings it all the time. But, yeah, I think that people wanted it to be sort of this feminist manifesto that it doesn’t need to be.”

Apparently, Shonda isn’t the only A-list celebrity who has criticized the movie since its premiere. As previously reported, earlier this month, Colombian singer Shakira revealed that her two sons hated the film.

Shakira, 47,
“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent.”
She furthered,
“I’m raising two boys. I want ‘em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”
