Iconic South African Actress Connie Chiume, Who Appeared In ‘Black Panther’ Films, Passes Away At 72 [CONDOLENCES]
Beloved South African actress and filmmaker Connie Chiume has passed away.
Connie Chiume, best known internationally for her role as Zawavari in Marvel’s Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, died on Aug. 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg following a period of illness. She is survived by her three children and five grandchildren.

Her family shared the news on her Instagram page, expressing their deep gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences:
“The Chiume family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for all the messages of support and condolences during this difficult time, as they cope with the loss of their mother, Connie.”

Connie Chiume’s son, Nongelo Chiume, confirmed the news to South African news channel Newzroom Afrika, explaining that while Chiume had been recovering from a medical procedure, her condition unexpectedly worsened:
“She was admitted for a medical procedure and she was recovering well but, unfortunately, we then got the news of her passing.”
He added,
“We are proud to be her children. She left us a beautiful legacy, not only just for her children or her family—but for the community and the country at large.”
Born in Welkom, South Africa, in 1952, Chiume began her acting career in the 1980s. Her notable TV credits include Zone 14, Rhythm City, and Queen Sono. Her contributions to the industry were recognized in 2022 when she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the South African Film and Television Awards.

In addition to her work in South Africa, Connie was featured in high-profile American films such as Black Panther and Beyoncé’s 2020 musical film Black Is King.
