Michael Rubin Confirms Whispers He Banned Diss Record ‘Not Like Us’ At His Recent All-White Party To Show Solidarity w/ Drake
If you want to hang around Drake, you better make sure your playlist is to his liking.
On the 4th of July, famed businessman Michael Rubin held his annual all-white party in the Hamptons. That same day, Kendrick Lamar dropped the music video for his hit diss record aimed at Drake, “Not Like Us.” The visuals for the track seemingly marked Kendrick Lamar’s final victory lap in his battle against the Toronto native. Naturally, given the success of the tune and the release of the highly anticipated music video, many expected footage to hit the internet of the song being played during Michael Rubin’s party filled with many celebrities, such as Quavo, Kim Kardashian, and Drake.
However, as the event came and went, the public noticed that none of the countless videos shared online by attendees showed a moment with Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics coming through the speakers. Rumors soon surfaced that the tune was banned to ensure Drake wasn’t uncomfortable.
During a newly aired interview with The Breakfast Club, Michael Rubin confirmed the whispers were true. Speaking on why he banned Kendrick Lamar’s record, he said,
“For me, Drake’s [been] my friend for a long time. I’m not going to invite him and then have — look, he’s been going through a little bit of a battle right now. … I just didn’t think it was appropriate, so I sent a notice. I said, ‘Hey, let’s not play anyone’s music that’s feuding with anyone that’s there.”
Sharing Drake didn’t ask him to do so, Michael Rubin added,
“That was a me decision.”
This isn’t the first time someone has spoken about making sure Drake isn’t around when “Not Like Us” is played. As previously reported, in July a DJ claimed Drake had the tune pulled from the playlist of several Houston nightclubs. The rapper recently shared his new state-issue ID following his move to Texas.
