South Carolina School Accused Of Ignoring Bullying That Led To 12-Year-Old Girl’s Su*cide Attempt
Kelaia Turner’s tragic story is at the center of a lawsuit against Greenville County Schools in South Carolina, accusing officials of neglecting a year of bullying that led to the 12-year-old attempting su*cide.
According to the suit, the torment began when Kelaia wore her natural hair to school, with classmates calling her names like “roach” and mocking her appearance. Kelaia’s teacher, Olivia Bennett, allegedly joined in, acknowledging the bullies when they asked, “Where’s the roach?”
Things escalated in 2022 when Kelaia got into a fight with one of the bullies, with school officials suspending her but not the tormentor. The bullying allegedly continued, and in 2023, Kelaia attempted sucide by h*nging herself, leaving her in a coma for weeks after paramedics revived her.
The lawsuit also claims that while Kelaia was in the ICU, one of the bullies snuck in, took photos of her, and mocked her injuries on social media.
Now 14, Kelaia’s family is seeking damages for her medical bills, psychiatric care, lost wages, and emotional suffering. Greenville County Schools has denied the allegations but expressed sympathy for Kelaia and her family.
