Montel Williams Recalls Using Fame To Fuel His Opioid Addiction: ‘As Celebrities, We Can Get Whatever We Want’
Montel Williams opened up about his past struggles with opioid addiction and how easy it was for him to secure narcotics during a recent interview on Maria Menounos’ Heal Squad podcast.
Reflecting on his time promoting and hosting The Montel Williams Show from 1991 to 2008, shared:
“As celebrities, we can get whatever we want… Back then, we didn’t have oxycodone, we had things like Talwin and morphine.”
He continued:
“I found I could call the hotel doctor and get a 10-day prescription for any drug I wanted, and they would just happily give it to me. So I started stocking up. At one point, I was taking about 12 to 13 pills a day.”

Williams acknowledged that the opioids prescribed to him were intended for short-term use but admitted to over-relying on them due to their easy accessibility.
Eventually, Williams said that his primary doctor intervened, threatening to report him to the DEA for “doctor shopping” and telling him:
“‘If you want relief, I’ve heard from some other patients like you that this marijuana thing seems to work … You’re a smart guy. Look it up, figure it out.’”
Williams, now an advocate for medical marijuana and hemp-based products for pain relief, concluded:
“And I did just that.”
