Burna Boy Trends After Dismissing Nigerian Music Charts: ‘Being No. 1 On Any Streaming Platform In Nigeria Is Not Something To Celebrate’
Burna Boy’s take on the relevance of Nigerian streaming charts has sparked major debate online.
The Grammy-winning Nigerian artist, known for breaking international barriers and performing at sold-out arenas worldwide, is drawing both support and criticism after downplaying the value of topping local charts. In a recent post, he wrote:
“Don’t let twitter polls and “Naija social media fans” deceive you. They won’t fill up any stadium for you in any part of the world.”
He added:
“Your song being No. 1 on any streaming platform in Nigeria is not something to celebrate. Aim higher or do other businesses on the side. I type with love.”

Critics quickly responded, accusing Burna Boy of once again belittling his home country and the fans who helped launch his global career. Many argued that Nigerian listeners were instrumental in his rise to international fame and emphasized his previous remarks about not being in the industry just to make money.
Supporters, however, backed his statement—agreeing that chart success in Nigeria doesn’t always translate into real financial gain or sustainable careers.
What are your thoughts on Burna Boy’s remarks? Was he being brutally honest, or unnecessarily dismissive?
