Issa Rae Says Comments On Her Platonic Relationships Were ‘Taken Out Of Context’ After Being Labeled A Bad Friend
Issa Rae is setting the record straight.
The Insecure creator responded to social media criticism after admitting she’s not a “check-in every day” type of friend on Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson’s IMO podcast. “I’m very much, ‘When I’m here, it’s all about you,’ but I don’t check in as often as I should with friends. I’ve been told that in the past, and I’ve adjusted,” she explained.
After the clip went viral and some labeled her a bad friend, Issa addressed the backlash while speaking to PEOPLE reporter Nate Vinson at the Met Gala. “First of all, I have a great tribe. And I saw that clip circulating, it was taken out of context. We were talking about friendship letters,” she clarified.

She acknowledged she’s still growing as a friend:
“I do realize that I’m not as giving as I want to be, and I have that conversation with my friends all the time.”
However, Issa said her friends are “understanding” and give her grace, and that she shows up for them in the ways they need.
