Mexico Sues Google Over ‘Gulf Of Mexico’ Labels On Google Maps, Rejects Trump’s Unilateral Renaming Of Gulf Of Mexico
Mexico is suing Google for listing the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on U.S. Google Maps, after President Claudia Sheinbaum’s repeated requests to reverse the name change were ignored.
“All we want is for the decree issued by the US government to be complied with,” she said, insisting the U.S. lacks authority to rename the entire gulf. Trump, on his first day back in office, signed an executive order justifying the name change because the U.S. “do most of the work there, and it’s ours.”
Google claimed the label followed its “longstanding practice” of using names from official government sources. The company added the label won’t appear in Mexico and will be shown as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)” elsewhere.
Sheinbaum first wrote to Google in January and threatened legal action in February. Meanwhile, Trump hinted at renaming the Persian Gulf, prompting Iran to warn it could “bring the wrath of all Iranians.”
Was the name change necessary?
