Ryan Coogler On Why ‘Sinners’ Won’t Have A Sequel: ‘I Wanted It To Be A Holistic & Finished Thing…A Full Meal’
Ryan Coogler isn’t planning a sequel to “Sinners,” and that’s exactly how he wanted it.
“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,” Coogler told Ebony. “I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me.”
The “Creed” and “Black Panther” director described “Sinners” as intentionally self-contained: “I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing… a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts.”
Released April 18, “Sinners” surpassed expectations, earning $48M domestically and $63M globally in its opening weekend.
Afterward, Coogler shared a heartfelt message: “Eternal gratitude… I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket… Who saw the film in groups… We always had our minds on you, the audience.”
