Pusha T Says Def Jam Tried To Cut Kendrick Lamar Feature From Upcoming Clipse Album Due To Drake Beef, Group Dropped After Refusing

Pusha T says a Kendrick verse caused major drama behind the scenes.

In a new interview with GQ, Pusha claimed Def Jam tried to interfere with Kendrick Lamar’s feature on “Chains & Whips,” a track from the upcoming Clipse album. He said:

“They wanted me to ask Kendrick to censor his verse, which of course I was never doing, and then they wanted me to take the record off.”

When he refused, the label pushed harder:

“After a month of not doing it, Steve Gawley, the lawyer over there was like, ‘We’ll just drop the Clipse.’ But that can’t work because I’m still there [solo]. But [if] you let us all go…”

Def Jam eventually dropped the group.

UMG, the parent company of Def Jam, also houses both Drake and Kendrick. After last summer’s rap battle and Drake’s lawsuit accusing UMG of promoting defamatory content, the label reportedly didn’t want the Toronto native’s two biggest rivals on a record together.

If you recall, Pusha T and Drake had a long-standing beef that came to a head when Pusha dropped “The Story of Adidon,” and Drake responded with “Duppy Freestyle.”

Pusha said the drama delayed the album, but it’s now set to drop July 11 under Roc Nation.
