Texas Democrat Nicole Collier Slams GOP’s ‘Authoritarian Tactic’ After Being Confined To House Floor For Refusing Police Escort
Texas Democratic legislator Nicole Collier is speaking out after spending the night on the House floor amid a redistricting standoff with state Republicans.
Collier expressed her frustration with GOP members for attempting to strong-arm Democrats into signing a “permission slip,” a document that would allow them to leave the Austin chambers only if they agreed to “round-the-clock” monitoring by Department of Public Safety officers until lawmakers reconvene on Wednesday. The talks center on redrawing Texas’ congressional map, which would ultimately grant Republicans more seats in Congress.
The legislator made it clear she wasn’t willing to comply, stating: “I disagree with that authoritarian tactic that they have taken.”

Collier added that although Democrats in Texas rarely see major wins due to being in the minority, the group still holds on to “principles” and “dignity,” values she says are worth standing up for.
As of now, Collier is expected to remain on the House floor until Wednesday (Aug. 20) in protest. She also thanked her fellow Democrats for helping her endure the experience by bringing supplies and showing support.
What are your thoughts on Nicole Collier’s ongoing protest?
