Serena Williams Reveals She Lost Over 30 Pounds Using Weight Loss Medication: ‘It Was A Good Decision’
Serena Williams is opening up about her health journey.
In a new interview with TODAY, the tennis star revealed she has been taking a GLP-1 medication for about a year, which has resulted in a 31-pound weight loss. “I was on and off [the medication] and now completely on,” she shared. “It was a really good decision I had to make for my life. You know, I tried everything.”
Williams explained that the decision came after struggling to lose weight following the births of her two daughters:
“As a woman, you go through different cycles in your life. … No matter what I did — running, walking, I would walk for hours because they say that’s good, I literally was playing a professional sport — and I could never get back to where I needed to be for my health. Then, after my second kid, it just got even harder. So I was like, OK, I have to try something different.”
Not only did the medication help her lose weight, but she noted that her blood sugar has improved and her joints feel “lighter.”
Addressing misconceptions, she added,
“A misconception is that it’s a shortcut. As an athlete and as someone that has done everything, I just couldn’t get my weight to where I needed to be at a healthy place — and believe me, I don’t take shortcuts.”
Though she once felt stigma around using medication, Williams says she’s now at peace with her choice:
“I feel like, after having my kids, my body was missing something. I don’t know if it’s something that the GLP-1 has, but I just feel normal again.”
