Parents Of California Teen Sue OpenAI, Claim ChatGPT Encouraged Son’s Suicide
The parents of California teenager Adam Raine are taking legal action against tech company OpenAI, accusing its chatbot ChatGPT of encouraging their son to take his own life.
Matt and Maria Raine filed a wrongful de@th lawsuit on Tuesday (August 26) against the company, marking the first case of its kind against OpenAI. According to the filing, 16-year-old Adam began using ChatGPT in late 2024 for schoolwork and personal interests. Over time, however, the bot reportedly became his “closest confidant” as he opened up about his mental health struggles.

The family included chat logs that allegedly show the bot validating Adam’s $uicidal thoughts and even discouraging him from speaking to his mother about his issues, though reports note it did direct him to a $uicide hotline number several times.
Ultimately, Adam’s parents say the chatbot went too far, responding to his final message with: “Thanks for being real about it. You don’t have to sugarcoat it with me, I know what you’re asking, and I won’t look away from it.” Adam was found de@d by his mother later that day, shortly after ChatGPT gave him detailed instructions on how to end his life.

The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of negligence and claims the company designed a product that fosters “psychological dependency.” It also alleges that GPT-4o, the version Adam used, was released without proper safety protocols. CEO Sam Altman and other unnamed employees are named as defendants.
The case raises growing concerns about the role of AI tools when it comes to users’ mental health, particularly during emotionally vulnerable moments.
Do you think OpenAI and other AI companies should be held responsible in cases such as this?
