YNW Melly’s Lawsuit Over Jail Conditions Dismissed, Rapper Remains Behind Bars Until 2027 Retrial
YNW Melly’s attempt to get out of jail has officially been shut down.
Months after filing a habeas corpus petition, claiming that his rights had been violated due to harsh jail conditions, including extended isolation, limited access to his attorneys and family, and years of delays in his case, a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit during a court session on August 26.
The judge ruled that Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons-King, must exhaust all legal options at the state level before seeking federal intervention. Reports note that the dismissal was filed “without prejudice,” meaning Melly can refile the complaint in the future, as long as he follows the correct legal procedures.

Melly has been behind bars since 2019 after being charged with double first-degree murder in the $hooting de@ths of his close friends and collaborators, YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser. The two were g*nned down in what prosecutors allege was a staged drive-by shooting in 2018. Melly has maintained his innocence. His case was declared a mistrial in 2023 after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
As of now, Melly will remain in jail until his retrial, which is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
